Two main groups of techniques exist, tie-dyeing and batik.
- Tie dyeing involves tieing the article to be dyed in specific ways so as to restrict the dye from reaching certain parts of the fabric, and in so doing, create a specific pattern.
- Batik involves using a wax or other water resistant substance to prevent the dye from dyeing the areas covered by the wax, and in this way to create patterns and/or images.
